Glitter Particle Sizes Explained: A Complete Size Chart for Wholesale Buyers

American Glitters bulk glitter manufacturer wholesale supplier USA

Introduction

One of the most common questions we receive from new wholesale buyers is: which glitter particle size do I need?

The answer depends entirely on your application. The same glitter colour in different particle sizes will behave completely differently — in a nail polish formula, on skin, in an epoxy resin, or as a paint additive. Getting the size wrong means either an unusable formulation or a product that doesn’t perform as expected.

This guide explains every glitter particle size category, how they’re measured, what they look like, and exactly what they’re used for.

How Is Glitter Size Measured?

In the US, glitter is typically measured in thousandths of an inch (0.001”). In Europe and international trade, microns (µm) are more common. Here’s the conversion:

US MeasurementMicrons (µm)Size Category
0.002” – 0.004”50 – 100 µmUltra Fine
0.006” – 0.008”150 – 200 µmFine

Ultra Fine Glitter (0.002” – 0.004”)

Ultra fine glitter is barely visible to the naked eye as individual particles. When applied or formulated, it creates a smooth, even shimmer or metallic sheen rather than a visible glitter effect.

Best applications:

  • Lip gloss and lip products — smooth enough not to feel gritty
  • Foundation and primer shimmer additives
  • Nail polish base shimmer
  • Highlighter powders
  • Industrial chrome and metallic paint effects

Fine Glitter (0.006” – 0.008”)

Fine glitter is the most widely used size across cosmetic and craft applications. Individual particles are visible but small, creating a classic glitter sparkle effect without looking coarse.

Best applications:

  • Eye shadow and eye glitter
  • Body glitter lotion
  • Nail polish and nail gels
  • General craft and scrapbooking
  • Paint additives for fine-textured metallic effect

Medium Glitter (0.015” – 0.025”)

Medium glitter creates a more visible sparkle effect. Individual particles are clearly visible and catch light dramatically. This is the size range most people think of when they picture ‘classic’ glitter.

Best applications:

  • Face and body glitter application
  • Glitter top coats for nails
  • Craft and decorative use
  • Festival and event makeup
  • Textile and fabric decoration

Chunky Glitter (0.040” – 0.062”)

Chunky glitter creates a bold, dramatic, multi-dimensional sparkle. This is the size most associated with festival glitter and statement beauty looks. It is too large for most nail polish formulations but ideal for gel overlays and art applications.

Best applications:

  • Festival body glitter and face glitter
  • Nail art gel and glitter bomb effects
  • Craft, card-making, and home décor
  • Epoxy resin art (larger particles create dramatic effects in clear resin)
  • Candle and soap making

Extra Chunky / Jumbo Glitter (0.094” and above)

At this size, glitter particles become individual visible flakes or sequin-like pieces. They are rarely used in formulated cosmetic products but are popular in decorative and industrial applications.

Best applications:

  • Resin art and jewellery
  • Home décor (ornaments, vases, wreaths)
  • Window display and visual merchandising
  • Floral decoration

Glitter Size vs Coverage Area

An important but often overlooked consideration: thinner, finer glitter covers more surface area per gram than chunky glitter of the same weight. This affects:

  • How much glitter you need per formulation unit (nail polish bottle, lotion tube, etc.)
  • Cost per application in your finished product
  • The texture and feel of your finished product

As a rule of thumb: 25kg of ultra-fine (0.004”) glitter covers approximately twice the surface area of 25kg of medium (0.025”) glitter.

How to Choose the Right Size for Your Application

If you’re unsure, this is our standard recommendation:

  1. Start with our Free Sampling service — request samples of 2–3 sizes in your preferred colour
  2. Test each size in your formulation or on your surface
  3. Evaluate: texture, suspension, coverage, visual effect
  4. Place your bulk order once you have confirmed the ideal size

Our team at American Glitters is happy to advise based on your specific formulation or application. Contact us with your product details and we’ll recommend the right particle size and grade.
