How Glitter Is Made: Inside the American Glitters Manufacturing Process

Introduction

Glitter is one of those products that seems deceptively simple — tiny reflective particles that catch the light. But the manufacturing process behind high-performance, cosmetic-grade, or biodegradable glitter is considerably more complex and precise than most buyers realise.

At American Glitters Inc., we have been manufacturing glitter since 1997. In this article, we take you through our manufacturing process from start to finish — including what separates ISO-certified manufacturing from commodity glitter production, and why it matters for the quality of your finished products.

Step 1: Raw Material Selection

Everything starts with the film. The type and quality of film used determines the performance, safety, and environmental profile of the finished glitter.

For Conventional Polyester Glitter

We use high-grade polyester (PET) film as the base material. The film is selected for:

  • Thickness consistency (measured in microns) — inconsistent thickness creates irregular reflectivity 
  • Optical clarity — determines how brilliantly the finished glitter reflects light 
  • Tensile strength — affects how cleanly the film cuts and how the particles hold their shape 
  • Chemical compatibility — the film must accept metallic and colour coatings without delamination 

For Biodegradable Glitter

Our biodegradable range uses sustainably sourced plant-based cellulose film. This film is:

  • Derived from eucalyptus wood pulp — a rapidly renewable resource 
  • Free from synthetic polymer coatings that would prevent biodegradation 
  • Certified to break down naturally in soil and water within 4–6 weeks 

Step 2: Metallic Coating

Plain film does not reflect light effectively. To create the sparkle effect, the base film is coated with a thin metallic layer through a vacuum metallization process.

In vacuum metallization, aluminium vapour is deposited onto the film surface in a vacuum chamber at temperatures exceeding 1,400°C. The result is an extremely thin, highly reflective aluminium layer — typically just 300–500 angstroms thick (approximately 0.00003mm).

For special effects glitters — holographic, iridescent, chameleon, or colour-shift — additional optical coating layers are applied. Holographic effects are created by embossing a diffraction grating pattern into the film before or after metallization, which splits white light into its spectral colours.

For our biodegradable range, we use alternative coating methods that avoid aluminium and plastic coatings — using only approved cosmetic-grade colourants compatible with the cellulose base.

Step 3: Colour Coating

Once the metallic base coat is applied, the film is colour-coated to achieve specific shade effects. Colour coatings are applied in thin layers and must:

  • Adhere uniformly to the metallized surface without peeling or flaking 
  • Be chemically stable — resistant to solvents, heat, and UV exposure as required by the application 
  • For cosmetic grades: use only approved colorants compliant with FDA and EU regulations 
  • For industrial grades: be optimised for solvent resistance, temperature resistance, or specific adhesion requirements 

Step 4: Precision Cutting

The coated film rolls are precision-cut into the exact shapes and sizes required. This is one of the most technically demanding steps in the process.

Glitter is cut using industrial rotary die-cutting systems. The precision of the cut determines:

  • Particle shape — hexagonal, square, random cut, star, heart, and other shapes 
  • Particle size consistency — critical for uniform performance in formulations 
  • Edge smoothness — particularly important for cosmetic-grade glitter where sharp edges could cause skin irritation 

At American Glitters, our cutting equipment is calibrated and maintained to ISO standards. Particle size is monitored throughout production runs to ensure consistency from the first gram to the last.

Step 5: Quality Control Testing

Every batch of glitter that leaves American Glitters Inc. goes through our quality control process before it is released for sale or shipment. Testing includes:

Solvent Resistance Testing

Samples from each batch are immersed in relevant solvents (acetone, ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, and/or epoxy components depending on the glitter grade) for specified periods and evaluated for colour bleeding, delamination, or particle breakdown.

Particle Size Verification

We use calibrated sieve analysis to verify that particle sizes are within specification tolerances. This is documented in the batch Certificate of Analysis (COA).

Cosmetic Compliance Screening

For all cosmetic-grade batches, we screen for restricted substances and verify compliance with FDA 21 CFR and EU REACH requirements. Documentation is retained and available to customers.

Colour Accuracy

Finished batches are compared against master shade standards using visual and spectrophotometric evaluation to ensure colour consistency across production runs.

Step 6: Packaging

Approved batches are packaged according to customer requirements. Our standard and OEM packaging options include:

  • 5kg poly bags (standard bulk export) 
  • 25kg cartons (5 x 5kg bags) 
  • 1kg and 250g jars with or without customer branding 
  • 7g and 3g retail cylinders with custom labels 
  • Custom blister packs for retail distribution 

All export shipments include a complete documentation package: COA, MSDS, packing list, commercial invoice, and country-specific compliance documents as required.

What ISO Certification Means for Manufacturing Quality

American Glitters holds three ISO certifications that govern our manufacturing process:

  • Our quality management system ensures that every step of production is documented, monitored, and continuously improved. This means consistent product quality batch after batch. ISO 9001:2015:
